Milwaukee is the largest city in the State of Wisconsin, the 31st most populous city in the United States, and 39th most populous region in the United States. It is the county seat of Milwaukee County and is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. According to 2010 census data, the City of Milwaukee has a population of 594,833. Milwaukee is the main cultural and economic center of the Milwaukee–Racine–Waukesha Metropolitan Area with a population of 2,040,498 as of an official 2013 estimate.
Known for its brewing traditions, major new additions to the city include the Milwaukee Riverwalk, the Wisconsin Center, Miller Park, an internationally renowned addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and Pier Wisconsin. In addition, the city hosts the Wisconsin State Fair, as well as Summerfest — listed in the 1999 Guinness Book of World Records as the largest music festival in the world, attracting around a million visitors each year to its eleven stages.
Milwaukee is home to a variety of primarily ethnically themed festivals throughout the summer, celebrating the city's rich history and diversity. From PrideFest and Polish Fest in June, to Bastille Days, Greek Fest, FestaItaliana, and German Fest in July, to African, Arab, Irish, Mexican, and American Indian events from August through September — Milwaukee truly is a festival city.
